Leashes Leashes are probably the most important piece of equipment next to your surfboard. They prevent surfboards from being swept away by waves and stop runaway surfboards from hitting other surfers and swimmers. Modern leashes are usually made of urethane and are categorized by their length and width. Leashes should be chosen based on the size of the waves you will be riding. Shorter, thinner leashes are not as strong but cause less dragging friction as you ride, the opposite being true of a longer, thicker leash. A thinner leash also provides faster surfing.
